We Keep Going - Deb Martin-Webster Books

A Poem in Honor of Black History Month

Side by side we arrive in darkness
Families torn apart our voyage uncertain
Braving heat, dust and death
In spirit, we keep going

Owned by others than our self
Toiling in the fields of cotton
Hung for skin a different hue
In spirit, we keep going

Refusing to give up a seat
Turned away at restaurants
Jailed for our right to vote
In spirit, we keep going

Heroes killed for sharing truth
Days of anger stopped our learning
Educators all are we
In spirit, we keep going

Now is the time to honor all
From presidents to every child
Humanity embraces us
In spirit, we keep going

From sea to shining sea
From now until eternity
Leaders we all must be
In spirit, we keep going
