Carving A Career
In 2010 I made the decision to work on several different projects. One was a book of haikus which was inspired by my brother who read my first haikus and loved them. He told me to do more haikus, which was published in anthology by Arthur H. Stockwell Ltd in 2000 entitled Collected Poems 2000 Millennium Edition. Taking his advice I started a book of haikus. It is almost finished and the title is Life Lessons.
The other writing project is a book of Christian poems which I have titled Healing Process. The message I am trying to portray is light and uplifting. Quite the opposite of what most people might get or feel from reading a Christian book or the bible. What people to walk away from reading this book is feeling positive and knowing that life is hard but you can overcome things by sharing and loving each other. Life is not meant to be easy or we would not learn anything. Though it is sad when bad things happens but I believe we need it to balance things out. I have completed this book and I am thinking getting made into a book by church as they said to send some of my work to them so they make it into a book.
I also started writing children poems by creating names starting with every letter of the alphabet. I came up with this idea from a friend of my brother who attended his wedding. She brought her son a baby of six months at that time. She was told that I write and she advised me to write a children’s book. Now the book is finished but I need an illustrator, which I am working on. An associate from the Sutton writers group who read the poems mentioned would be great with pictures as well. She explained that it immediately occurred to her how well it would illustrate. And that almost everyone tells a story which pictures can enhance the theme making it a better story for people to read. Thinking about it myself I realised that she is right. Most of the books I enjoyed as I child had great pictures to look at. For instance one of the books that I vividly remember is Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. The story is about one character called Sam who tries to convince another character who is unnamed to try green eggs and ham. Sam is unsuccessful so tries to persuade the unnamed character by going through different locations and dinning partners. Sam meets with resistance at first but the unnamed character gives in at the end and tries the dish on the condition that Sam leaves him alone after. After trying the food the unnamed character realises that he does actually like it. At the end the unnamed character thanks Sam for not giving up and being persistent. What makes the story unique is the fact that there is no descriptive narrative or analysis. The story is told by pictures and rhyming dialogue.
