Thanksgiving Day - Jayne's Poetry Corner

Happiness and sorrow

My day started out routine. Turkey cooked too early, gravy thin but tasty while the rest of the dinner went well. My son, daughter-in-law came bringing their two active children, a boy and a girl. My daughter went to work at noon so we didn't have a complete family. Yet she'll be home soon.

The thing that upset my day was the death of a squirrel. I feed them in our backyard and one of my dogs (or two) got him. He died in my arms. No struggle for breath, just a quiet passing. I cried hysterically anyway. It was a life gone.

How many years will it be before there won't be any squirrels, rabbits or other wildlife to cry over. The abundance I knew of these creatures as a child no longer is visible.

Save the planet? Can we? Is there time? Or have we destroyed the root of survival already?

Yes I had a nice Thanksgiving. We, of the planet earth, have much to be thankful for but...for how long?
