Lately I've been pretty pleased with the direction my two Democratic clubs are taking. In one (the more conservative, in my view) the executive board has agreed on sending letters to local pols urging not only their vote but energy in getting SB 810, the version of SB 840 that was twice vetoed by Arnold Scwharzenegger, to Jerry Brown's desk and to use evey ounce of clout in their body to get his signature on it and make California the second state in the nation to do so (behind Vermont). In the other Dem club we just had Ellen Brown, author of Web of Debt, speak at the monthly meeting and we'll soon off another letter encouraging the passage of A 750 by Ben Hueso (D-San Diego). So the article on TPM about the Progressive Caucus in the House pushing to shift the focus on eliminating unemployment rather than worrying about the deficit adds to this good feeling.Raul Grijalva, chair of the CPC, correctly noted that in the past the federal government has always stepped in to fill the void in times such as the ones we're in right now. The difference now is that Dems have been Bambi-ing lately ("This comes from being timid--it really does"--Grijalva). Part of this will include raising taxes on the weatlhiest 1%, something Americans support in big numbers according to recent polls.
