Domestic Abuse in Guyana: A Social Problem on a quest for desperate solutions

Summary

This book was written in order to fully comprehend the issue of domestic violence as it pertains to the Guyanese experience. However, to fully comprehend the Guyanese experience on this topic does not mean I  could not have ignored the history of violence and its evolution globally.

Therefore, the follow topics are covered in this book:

In Chapter One when I looked at the Origins of Violence I also discussed in detail the history and concept of violence, the emergence of violence in the home, the effects of family life in Guyana, the impact on the quality of life in Guyana, the affects of violence on the various lifestyles in Guyana, after which I concluded the chapter with a discussion on what should be expected in the near future should domestic violence in Guyana be left unattended.

In Chapter Two when I looked at the Progress of Domestic Violence within the Guyanese Society I discussed domestic violence as a social problem evolving out of control, Guyana's coping mechanisms presently and in the past, including the mistakes made on a societal plain in dealing with the issue and after which I concluded with recommended solutions to the problem.

In Chapter Three when I looked at The Law on Domestic Violence I endeavoured to gain the perspectives of Legal and Medical Practitioners' points of view on the topic, also I wanted the inner workings of the Parliamentary Debates on the topic. The chapter also consists of a detailed discussion on the act, its strengths and weaknesses, room for improvement, impact on social classes. I also decided to measure our Guyanese Domestic Legislation against the forerunners in the world - UK, USA, CANADA, CHINA, AUSTRALIA, INDIA and SOUTH AFRICA. In concluding this chapter I looked at ways in which we can legislate our improved amendment by reaching the needs of the people and how to help them.

In Chapter Four when I looked at the Approaches in which we can change Domestic Violence in Guyana, I discussed the psychology and pathology behind domestic violence, a mind's eye into the perpetrator's thought processes, the relevancy of change in the perpetrator's life prior to domestic violent acts, during them and after them. I also looked at the factors in which causes and contributes towards a perpetrator's change in attitude moving from violence to non violence. The events leading to long or short term committment and what occurs at the stage of relapse. I felt it was necessary to include a sub category that focusses on the issue of relapse and thought processes and seek to understand and discuss the overriding factors contributing to both non violence and violence in the perpetrator's mind. I also focussed some discussion on the victim's trauma and which of the two is stronger - trauma versus violence and the counselling techniques used in behavioural changes in both the victim and the perpetrator for social change.

In Chapter Five, which is a very important chapter I discussed Domestic Violence in the home where the Perpetrator is the sole breadwinner in the family. It consists of a case study exhibiting the stages of poverty the poor faces while combatting this problem and suggested interventionists approaches to these sub- problems.

I concluded in Chapter Six on the focus of advocacy on this problem in Guyana and what should be a new school of thought.

The following is a Preview of the Table of Contents in relation to the abovementioned.
